I personally think that people should use trap cards that were used in the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" and "Yu-Gi-Oh! GX" series, cards like "Trap Hole" and "Magic Jammer." They are other amazing cards in the new series like "5D's" and "Zexal" but i personally think that to use those cards you have to playing a certain deck, like the deck "GaGaGa" and other decks you see in Zexal and 5D's. I personally think that trap cards that were created a while back are easier to use, and more fun.

Trap cards from the earlier days of the game are now often outclassed by newer trap cards. Take trap hole for example. Bottomless Trap Hole outclasses it in every way, as does Solemn Warning. Trap hole can only be used on Normal Summons, doesn't negate any trigger effects (such as Machina Gearframe) and sends monsters to the graveyard, which is something two of the big three nets decks out now love to happen. The trap cards that see play today see play because they outclass the other trap cards in the game, plain and simple.

a "set" of the old trap cards I really like using in some of my decks are the spiritual (attribute) art - cards since they have very versatile effects.

Earth- tribute earth, ss level 4 or lower earth from grave
Fire- Tribute Fire- burn for half of the tributed atk monster
those are kinda meh

Light- Tribute light, ss banished monster, opponent can reveal trap from hand to neg
Dark spirit art - tribute Dark, draw 2, opponent can neg if they reveal a spell from hand
Those are very situational, and require very intensive strategic planning to use correctly

Water- Tribute water, look at opponents hand and send 1 to the grave
Wind- Tribute wind, Target 1 card on the opponents field, return it to the bottom of their deck
These two are my absolute favorite, they have a cost but their rewards are so satisfying and can help you around some annoying situations.
